Sadly, on this day (26 April) 1970 the world lost the legend that was Gypsy Rose Lee
Gypsy Rose Lee (Louise Hovick): vintage 8x10 photo with print signature of Louise Hovick. Between 1937-38 Gypsy went to Hollywood and appeared in five films under her given name Louise Hovick. There are 2 stories as to why she was credited under her real name:
1. It has been said that the film industry wantedto distance her from her striptease past, and hence used her real name…perhaps in an effort to sneak her past the censors or the day.
2. It has also been said that Gypsy insisted on being credited under her real name, because she was not happy with the quality of the roles she was given and she did not want to tarnish her famous stage name by associating it with mediocre films.
As with most things in Gypsy’s life, it will probably never be known for certain which is true. She had the gift of ‘spinning a yarn’ and being factual was never her strong suit, but perhaps that is part of what makes her so iconic?
